NEW: Join in for Feeder Fidelity - Filling the bird feeders inspires us to get out in the winter. But are these the same feeder birds who were here before? That's what we want to know.
Northern Cardinal
This project began in January/February 2016:
Feeder fidelity banding brings us dark-eyed juncos, northern cardinal, tufted titmouse, black-capped chickadee, white-breasted nuthatch, and more. We set up our nets and carefully band and release all of the individuals that appear at the feeders and fall into the nets. It continues to amaze me as we remove another junco from the nets -UNBANDED. How can there be any left unbanded? We have been out in the field since the start of January, and have banded over 100 songbirds and yet there are still new birds arriving at the feeders daily. We have a lot of data to sift through as we begin to formulate conclusions about the fidelity of individual birds to our feeding station.
