The Pocono Avian Research Center, Inc. is dedicated to fostering an appreciation of our native birds and their habitats through research, education and community involvement. Expand your knowledge of the birds, share your enthusiasm and get involved in meaningful scientific research. All research projects are conducted in the Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania.
Community Involvement
The Pocono Avian Research Center offers a wide array of opportunities for the community to get involved. Individuals can help with ongoing research projects or assist with public education. Volunteers will have a truly unique "hands on" experience as avian ecologists.
Research
PARC is involved in many long-term research projects to further our knowledge of the breeding, wintering and migratory ecology of birds. In all of our research endeavors, bird safety is our number one priority!
MAPS - monitoring the breeding success and survivorship of summer resident songbirds.
Project OWLNET – a long term banding project to study the migratory patterns of our smallest owl, the Northern Saw-whet Owl.
Barn Owl Surveys – a study of the populations of Barn Owls and their nesting habits.
Invasive species studies – investigations of how native communities change and adapt to invasive species.
Community Nest Box project – investigations into the breeding success of eastern bluebirds and other cavity nesting species.
Local studies to monitor trends in avian populations.
Research projects rely heavily upon volunteer assistance. Contact us about participating in these important studies.
Education
We offer educational programs for local schools, civic groups and the interested public. Programs may be tailored to your needs, using slide shows, nature walks and lectures. Topics include the region's native birds, results of our research studies, and the ecology of birds. These programs can be requested by anyone - no group is too small.
